“Faith is the confidence that we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.” Hebrews 11:1
I must confess that my faith is often weak. Because I worked in the health and fitness industry, faith reminds me of exercising. To increase muscle mass, one must push the body beyond its normal activity. Bodybuilders must lift heavy weights to over tax the muscle, thus tearing down the muscle fibers so they will rebuild even stronger. This is how we exercise because this is how we believe. So goes faith in God. It needs to be exercised regularly. “Faith is confident belief and behavior based on what God says”.
In our passage today, we are given an impressive list of faithful followers of God. These brothers and sisters lived a life of confidence in God’s word and anticipation of an unseen future. Noah built an ark in the middle of the desert! People around him thought he was crazy, (I would too). However, God enabled him to foresee danger and destruction. “Now faith is the assurance (substance) of things hoped for, the conviction (evidence) of things not seen.” (Heb.11:1). This is certainly where I struggle.
Abel’s faith was demonstrated by his worship. Enoch’s faith was seen through his walk with the Lord, and Noah’s by his works. Abraham left his country, trusting God for his future in a foreign land. Abraham and Sarah by faith, received God’s “impossible” promise of a son, (the woman was barren and old!). Faith helps us endure many difficulties. (Here comes the hard part,.....) Faith in God does not guarantee a carefree life, but rather a difficult life full of troubles and the demands of leaving behind worldly pleasures and walking with God. I don’t know about you, but for me I've needed “God Confidence” through my childhood, marriage, and children, (ok, so I guess all my life). Perhaps the same for you? It seems that God used incredibly hard situations to grow my faith, (you too?). And it worked!!!! Learning to trust God may be painful at times but always very effective.
Receive courage from these great heroes of faith. We cannot know it all, however our all-knowing God does. Creation cannot know everything the Creator knows. Jesus says that if we have the faith of a mustard seed, we can move mountains! Do you live like you believe this?
Faith is the confidence that we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.
Prayer to start with: God, you have proven your faithfulness time and time again, yet I still struggle. Remind me daily through your word that you are always with me. Walk with me through my trials, through my happy times, and through the darkest days. I know you will prevail. Amen.
