Ezekiel 7:1-9:11
Hebrews 5:1-14
Psalm 105:1-15
Proverbs 26:28

The word “sovereign” is defined several ways in the English language. Merriam Webster dictionary cites the following definitions:

“One possessing or held to possess supreme political power”
“Of the most exalted kind: supreme”
“Of an unqualified nature: unmitigated”
“Unlimited in extent: absolute”
“Enjoying autonomy: independent”

Whatever definition you pick, this word can only completely accurately describe one being: our heavenly Father. And today especially, I know I need to remember that. Our God is completely sovereign over all things.

On this election day, I feel the weight and anxiety of wondering what’s in store for our country. None of us knows what the future holds or how people will react, and yet, in the midst of feelings of uncertainty, we can know that God is over it all. He exists apart from any person or event. God’s going to do whatever God wants to do (just see our chapters in Ezekiel for today...), and no one or thing can stop Him. In this moment of history, God is still sovereign.

As we wait today to hear the results and see how things will play out, will you join me in following the words of the Psalmist in Psalm 105? Let’s give praise to the Lord and talk about what He’s done for us. Let’s sing to Him and glory in His name. Let’s remember the wonders He has done since the beginning of time.

Let our hearts rejoice as we seek Him! Our God is sovereign! With Him, our futures are secure.

To Memorize:

Sing to him; yes, sing his praises.
Tell everyone about his wonderful deeds.
Exult in his holy name;
rejoice, you who worship the Lord.
Search for the Lord and for his strength;
continually seek him.

— Psalm 105:2-4

Prayer to start with: God we praise you because you are in control! And though we feel uncertain today, we want to put our trust in You. You are holy, and you are sovereign over all things. Thank you for giving us hope beyond this world. We love you. Amen.
