Passages of the day: Click HERE to read today’s passages.
Every day we are confronted with choices we have to make. It could be deciding what to eat for breakfast, what clothes to wear or even which car to drive. Some decisions are no brainers but others take more thought.
In today’s passage in Jeremiah and Psalms, the writer describes the poor state of affairs of God’s own chosen people who did not deserve God’s favor but nevertheless was set aside to be a blessing to the rest of the world. However, time and time again since being freed from slavery in Egypt, the people of God repeatedly chose to turn their trust in God to poor substitutes that did not satisfy them, but in fact was detrimental. Despite their unfaithfulness, God never stopped loving them and was always compassionate (Jer. 9:24 and Ps. 78:38).
In the Colossians passage, the Apostle Paul exhorts us to also choose --- to leave off the old clothes of our “earthly nature”, which is characterized by seeking self worth in wealth, power, relationships, and race. But instead, put on the new clothes that we now have as God’s chosen people (Col 3:12).
Where did these new clothes come from? It is the result of the gospel message. It’s the peace you receive from Christ who loves you unconditionally and paid the consequences of your sin and calls us children of God! Our self worth is found in Christ alone! This new life is empowered by God’s Word indwelling in us which altogether produces a thankful heart. (Col. 3:15-17)
Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.
— Collosians 3:10
Prayer to start with: Dear Heavenly Father, everyday, may I choose to live as who I truly am --- a child of God who is unconditionally loved by my heavenly Father because of Jesus’ sacrifice for me.
