I love the ocean. Not as fond of the beach, though. That sand gets into everything! I have had the privilege of living within walking distance of both the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. Before I moved to the Bay area six years ago, I lived on a tiny peninsula that jutted into Boston Harbor. Our small town was accessible by only two roads and when it stormed, we could use only one. It was always fun driving along the seawall during a Nor’easter. Watching the waves crash over the cars wasn’t scary; it was awe-inspiring and a reminder that only God can control the sea.
Needless to say, God’s relationship with water is significant -- from its creation to the Flood to the Living Water of Christ. Today’s passage in Isaiah tells us the LORD will quench the thirst of the poor and needy and make rivers flow on barren heights (v.18). Why? So that people may see and know, may consider and understand, that the hand of the LORD has done this (v. 20).
Although it may not have been our thirst God quenched, He has taken care of us in innumerable ways. We’ve all experienced His provision during times of need. Let us always see, know, consider and understand that the hand of the LORD has done this.
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
And when you pass through the rivers,
They will not sweep over you.
— Isaiah 43:2a
Prayer to start with: God, thank you for your provision. You always provide in my time of need and surpass everything I could ever want or need. You know exactly what I need at all times. Amen.
