Job 4:1-7:21
1 Corinthians 14:18-40
Psalm 37:30-40
Proverbs 21:27

I can say 2020 started amazingly! I had high hopes for this year (and I like to think I still do). We moved to the Bay area at the end of January and officially joined this incredible church body here at New North Church. Then as we all know, Covid-19 surfaced and swooped over the landscape of not only the United States of America but the entire world. I have never seen a year where a good number of people would rate 2020 (if they could rate it on Yelp) a one star out of five stars. I don’t think anyone has ever experienced anything like this. We all have had to adjust to a “new normal” where life can feel like we are on endless Zoom calls.

Life can bring some highs and lows with different seasons that we walkthrough. When things are great, it can be so much easier to praise and love God because life is going how we wanted it to go or perhaps even better. In turn, when life feels like we are living in a series of life’s unfortunate events. When obstacles seem to are presented, it can make it harder to press into God. In reading today’s verses from Job, we see Job truly going through it.

Job 7: 5-7 -“ My flesh is clothed with worms and dirt; my skin hardens, then breaks out afresh.  My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle and come to their end without hope.  “Remember that my life is a breath; my eye will never again see good.”

Every time I read Job’s story, it blows me away, the amount of loss he experienced. He truly experienced hopelessness on another level, and even though we know God does bless him with so much more, we can see he is experiencing unspeakable pain. 2020 has been challenging to so many in many ways, but God is still present and ready to love, guide us with wisdom, and nurture us through this challenging season. There are many uncertain things in this life, but God is truly the most constant presence in our lives, even when it may not always seem so. It is crucial to continue to press forward, knowing that in whatever 2020 or the future brings our way.

To memorize:

The Lord helps them, rescuing them from the wicked.
He saves them, and they find shelter in him.

— Psalm 37:40

Prayer to start with: Lord, you know what lies ahead of me. No matter what is thrown my way that you keep me on the path that you have set for me and let me always feel the presence of the hope you bring. I know you are always with me. Amen.
