Offended yet? Is your blood boiling? Ready for a fight? Or maybe you just froze? Feeling frightened? Want to stop reading and turn away? Uncomfortable? "What in the world...?"

"The proud and arrogant person...behaves with insolent fury." According to Dictionary.com, "insolent" means "boldly rude or disrespectful; contemptuously impertinent; insulting." With the exception of the first statement, all the others could be simple assertions. But most of the time, it's the feelings and emotions attached to them that cause a wide range of reactions. We make assumptions of the person which may or may not be true...often treating them with insolent fury, maybe quietly ignoring and avoiding them, talking about them to others to ruin their reputation (otherwise known as gossip) or outright verbally berating them. The issue is with our hearts and minds. Do we still see this person making this statement as a person created in the Imago Dei, Image of God? Or has that person become "Other."

Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity. Do not fret because of those who are evil. Trust in the Lord and do good. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will do this. The fact is, you only have control over your own actions and reactions. Words are POWERFUL. By words alone, God created EVERYTHING. Be like Esther in this passage. Use your words as an instrument of good. She did not yell at Haman. She didn't call him bad names behind his back. She didn't avoid her duty either. No. She used her words at the right time, with the right person, in the right attitude. She wasn't fighting a man. She was fighting an idea. God did the rest.

You can do the same. We are not fighting men. We are fighting ideas. If that seems impossible. It is. But with God, anything is possible. Even your reactions. So measure your words. Use them in thoughtfully, wisely, in humility and with courage. Honor the man. Test the idea. Do your duty. Love does nothing less.

To memorize:

Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity.
The proud and arrogant person - "Mocker" is his name - behaves with insolent fury.

— Proverbs 21:23-24

Prayer to start with: God. Creator of the Universe...just with words. Glory and honor to you, only you. Because you deserve it. Nothing thwarts you. Nothing has the power to stop you. Lord, I confess I am not careful with my words... especially in my mind. Lord, I confess I do not understand the power behind them...nor do I guard my tongue. I am "Mocker". Lord, help. May my words be few, tempered with grace and truth and love. May my corner of the world know I am yours because my words are laced with your power, not my pride. Let me be an instrument of Shalom you are proud to use.
