Acts 12:24-13:15
Psalm 137:1-9
Proverbs 17:16

Evil is all around us. There are too many examples of how evil is trying to destroy us, prevent the sharing of God’s word or tricking us by perverting His law. In Acts 13:4-13 we see an example of how evil tried to stop the good news of the Lord. Paul and Barnabas were called to share God’s word with a proconsul, but Elymas, a sorcerer, wanted to oppose them. Paul and Barnabas were able to see through this trickery and ended up amazing the proconsul.

How were Paul and Barnabas able to do this? By God’s grace, their actions we can use as an example to follow today. They prayed, fasted and others prayed and laid hands on them. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and were looking to share the word of God. I think many of us are often good up to this point, but there is more. They called out the evil when it challenged them: “You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord!” I feel that this is the difficult part the Gospel calls us to do. We often feel that a passive approach is better. But no! We can’t be passive about evil. If we pray, fast and call on the Holy Spirit He will give us the strength and courage of Paul to look evil in the eye and call it out.

To memorize:

Why should fools have money in hand to buy wisdom,
when they are not able to understand it?

— Proverbs 17:16

Prayer to start with: Lord, thank you for your heavenly word. Give me strength through prayer, fasting and seeking the Holy Spirit to protect the right ways of you.
