One of my favorite podcasts is NPR’s “How I built this, with Guy Raz” This show revolves around Guy interviewing some of the most successful business owners in America. Most of these company creators have businesses that I am sure you are familiar with from Southwest Airlines to the Peloton Bike.

An interesting theme about most of these stories is that they were started by very common people who just one day had an idea. Most of these creators did not come from wealth or were born with any particular skills that anyone else would possess. They just had an idea and did whatever it took to see that idea flourish. Every episode is inspiring to hear the stories of these amazing men and women.

When I read Acts 6 this week, it made me think about “How I Built This with Guy Raz”. I was imagining Guy interviewing God.

“So God, how did you start your church after your Son Jesus left his Disciples to go out and start?”

“Great question, Guy. It’s actually a fun story. Basically my spirit came and and empowered many to spread the good news of what my Son accomplished on the cross, using signs wonders and miracles.”

“Wow,” said Guy.

“Wow indeed! Well, you know Guy, the same spirit that was active in my Son Jesus is the same spirit that lived in the disciples and is living in all who call upon my Son’s name. Isn’t that wonderful?!”

“Very wonderful, God,” Guy said smiling...

Of course that is just something I imagined up, but it’s true! A waiter by the name of Stephen who was finishing up his shift at the local restaurant was selected by the apostles and was commissioned by the laying of hands. Stephen was full of faith and the power of the Holy Spirit - he performed many miracles, signs and wonders and everyone was amazed to the point that local religious figures were offended.

Isn’t this so typical of God? He chose the least qualified people to spread the news of Jesus - a table waiter of all people, Stephen. He did many great miracles and preached the good news.

To memorize:

The Lord has done great things for us,
and we are filled with joy.

— Psalm 126:3

Prayer to start with: I pray that the Lord makes us servants who carry His glory! We all have the same spirit living in us now that operated through Jesus, the disciples and Stephen. This is the same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead. Lord, give us the boldness to operate in mighty ways in your name. Amen!
