1 Samuel 12:1-13:23
John 7:1-30
Psalm 108:1-13
Proverbs 15:4

The reading today calls me to consider how well I am being God’s friend. Not just an acquaintance or spectating party, but an intimate soulmate-type friend; one that sticks. One that you can always count on to have your back. Have you ever had a friend like that? Someone who would hold your deepest secrets and at the same time release your biggest failures. Someone who would show you love in action, not just word. Someone who wouldn’t be turned off by your messy past and would show you love in your messy future.

I would venture to say not many of us have been blessed with, or invested time into, that type of confidante. Personally, looking back, I realize I may have been gifted more of those than I realized at the time, but I did not water the soil of those friendships the way I should have. Because we don’t have a ton of experience in this, I believe God works extra hard to teach us what it looks and feels like to be and have that type of friend- in Him.

After all- you ask any Christian what their purpose in life is- and one of the top 3 reasons you will hear is always “to be more like Jesus.” WHY?? Because Jesus and Father God were in perfect fellowship- they were synced in their affection, sacrifice, focus and persistence for one another. Jesus was a perfect friend to Father God (and remains so), and for us to become more like Jesus IS for us to become better friends to God Almighty. We are, after all, going to spend eternity with Him! He walks it out by delivering on promise after promise and lovingly instructs us how to show him a covenant devotion.

One thing he asks is for us to stay focused on Him! I Sam 12:21 says “...do not turn aside; for then you would go after empty things which cannot profit or deliver, for they are nothing.” He makes this ask because God does not lose focus on US. He is obsessed with us, we are constantly on His mind, He does not let anything distract Him. The cares we have, the emotions we struggle with- He’s right by our side when we need to vent to Him. Why? Of course because He is God, but also, He’s walking out his overflowing lovingkindess for us. He’s leading us by example.

The next verse says that “the Lord will not forsake His people...because it has pleased the Lord to make you His people.” God is proud to be our friend. Are we growing in our ability to show Him friendship like He does? Will we remain steadfast and laser-focused on Him, or turn to things of this world that hold no value? Will we believe what He says, and take Him at His word? Will we believe He is on our side, that He is pleased to call us His friends? Will we walk away from Him when things get tough, embarrassing or shameful? Because God won’t do it to us. He is in this for the long haul- and He wants us to be also.

To memorize:

But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.

— 1 Samuel 12:24

Prayer to start with: Lord, please help me to remember daily your goodness. Help me remember that you are faithful and and always come through. I cannot doubt you because you are the sovereign one on the throne. Your love is everlasting. Your mercy is good. I know I can count on you because you are my Father and friend. Amen.
