Judges 15:1-16:31
John 2:1-25
Psalm 103:1-22
Proverbs 14:17-19

It is the 7th week of our shelter in place. I imagine that similar to my household, you find yourself eating, clearing out the cupboards and refrigerators! I also imagine that some of you are “Marie Kondo-ing your closets and drawers, asking yourself “Does this shirt spark joy?” But have you stopped lately to ask what you might need Jesus to clear out in your life?

In John 2:13-25, we find Jesus clearing out the temple courts. It was almost time for the Jewish Passover, when Jesus arrived in the temple courts to find that it has been turned into a marketplace. Jesus proceeds in making a whip out of cords and drives everyone, animals and all, out of the temple. Why is Jesus so enraged? The outer courts of the temple were being ruined by the selling of goods. The temple was God’s house and it was the only place where Gentiles could come and worship. And because of the greed of some, it was keeping Gentiles from worshiping God. John 2:17 reads, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” By example, it is very clear that Jesus is passionate about the purity of our worship. So, what is clouding your worship right now, as we are sheltered in place?

Is the stress of having everyone under one roof causing you to react? Proverbs 14:17-19 tells us to not be quick tempered and foolish. This is so convicting as I too often take my stress out on my family when I feel overwhelmed. Lord help me speak kind words that bring life, remove my deceitful tongue and foolishness!

As we read Judges Ch. 15 & 16, we see more examples of internal struggle. Perhaps you feel slighted by someone and thoughts of revenge consume you as it did with Samson. We read how careless Samson was when he told Delilah the secret to his strength. How often do we find ourselves lusting after something, willing to trade the gifts God gives us for much lesser things?

Psalm 103 is a wonderful reminder that God forgives all of our sins, heals all of our diseases and even redeems us from death. Don’t let fears of COVID-19 rob you from remembering that the Lord’s love is with those who fear Him. Ask God to remove the things that block you from worship. Whatever is clouding your heart right now, ask Jesus to clear the way!

To memorize:
Let all that I am Praise the Lord, with my whole heart, I will praise His holy name.
— Psalm 103:1

Amen.
