Judges 13:1-14:20
John 1:29-51
Psalm 102:1-28
Proverbs 14:15-16

Imagine being visited by an angel of God and informed that you will have a son. We are aware of this happening a few times in Scripture (and forgive me, if I’ve left any out): Sarah (Isaac’s mother), Samson’s mother, Hannah (Samuel’s mother), Elizabeth (John’s mother), and, of course, Mary, the mother of Jesus. Each is given specific instructions on how to raise their boys.

We tend to be very hard on the heroes we read about in the Bible. We learn from Samson’s story that he did not always live up to the expectations placed on him; yet he fulfilled the role God mapped out for him and is listed as one of His faithful servants in Hebrews 11.

I am the mother of five and not once did an angel stop by to let me know how to raise any of them. My four boys and daughter haven’t always lived up to my expectations. They’ve done a few things that didn’t make me happy: there was a laser light incident, a couple of car accidents, and a visit from the police regarding a BB gun hole in the neighbor’s screen door. I still don’t know how ketchup ended up on the kitchen ceiling! But in spite of sleepless nights, buckets of tears, and a few shouting matches, my love for these children has never dimmed. In fact, it has helped me to realize just how deeply God loves me. As our Father, His love is unconditional, even when we mess up. What an encouragement to realize that just like our love cannot be earned, it cannot be lost. That’s the kind of mother I am and I am grateful to have such a Father.

To memorize:
Let this be written or a future generation,
That a people not yet created may praise the Lord.
— Psalm 102:18

Prayer to start with: Almighty God, whose loving hand has given us all that we possess: Grant us grace that we may honor you with our substance, and, remembering the account which we must one day give, may be faithful stewards of your bounty, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Things to pray for:
Thank God for giving you all that you have
Pray that God would help you to remember that you will stand before him one day and give an account for your life
Pray for the grace of Jesus to live today for him with all you are
