Things Revealed: Listen and Be Transformed
I was asked if I’d like to write a devotion for New North during this time of the CoronaVirus. I was fearful and hesitant but stepped out in faith Knowing, MY God would come through for me--He is faithful!
Reading these verses, I am reminded that our God is a God of eternal truths--from eternity to the writing of this devotion today and into the days of Christ Jesus. We cannot hide from Him--we learned that from the teaching of Jonah. He is the God who “sees” us (Gen:16:13). And it was revealed to the Pharisees as well, when Jesus said that their “insides were maggoty with greed and secret evil”.
So what was the reaction of the Pharisees when Jesus “called them out”? He confronted them with the truth. They obviously listened and heard Him loud and clear! Verses 53-54 state, “As soon as Jesus left the table...they went into a rage...plotting how they could trap Him…”
This interaction prompted me to look at the various ways each of us may personally react or respond to being confronted with a difficult truth or correction. Would we fly into a rage like the Pharisees? Abandon our God (cuz it’s just too hard)? Or look at it as an opportunity to grow into being more like our loving Lord Jesus? I hope to choose the latter and there have been times that I have. I know it’s not easy but I hope to always be willing to examine a correction for any and all truth in it. I will share an example from my life…
When I was newly married my husband and I would often go on nights out with another couple. One night, (for which I am still grateful but was a tough pill to swallow!), my friend told me that she and her husband were uncomfortable by the way I would argue with my husband in front of them.
I loved my friend and knew she was speaking the truth. I, as well as she, could have ended the friendship right then and there. But thankfully, I took the needed correction and the 4 of us continue to share a 30+ year friendship!
Another way I hear God’s truth is by listening to the Holy Spirit’s voice of truth within me. When I make or am about to make a bad choice, if I listen, I hear the voice of the Holy Spirit correcting me. This happened to me just this afternoon! I was going to do something and the Holy Spirit interceded and asked me to examine my motive. Was it pure and good? No, it wasn’t and I gave thanks for the correction.
Our God is a good, good Father. We need to teach our children and grandchildren all about Him. Teach them of “ the marvelous things He has done”. And that Jesus “is the way, the truth and the life”. Let’s not be like the hypocrites but instead, sit at the feet of Jesus, listen and be transformed!
“Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all
numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more
than many sparrows.”
— Luke 12:7
